OSとは、コンピュータシステムを動作させるための基盤となるプログラムの総称です。パーソナルコンピュータ向けの代表的なOSとしてWindows、Mac OS、Linuxなどが挙げられます。
OSはコンピュータシステムのハードウェアを制御し、ハードウェアを演算処理や操作に使用できるようにしています。入出力の制御、記憶装置に対するデータの読み書き、ユーザーインターフェースの提供、アプリケーションソフトウェアの動作、同時に実行している複数のタスク(処理)へのコンピュータリソースの割り当てやプロセスの管理、等々、コンピュータシステムの制御に係るあらゆる要素がOSによって提供されています。
OSは「オペレーティングシステム」(operating system)を略した言い方です。operating は動詞 operate に接尾辞 -ing を付けて名詞・形容詞化した語で、「仕事をする」「経営・管理する」「運転・操縦する」および「手術(オペ)をする」といった意味のある単語です。コンピュータシステムがコンピュータシステムとして作動するためには必要不可欠の要素です。OSがインストールされていないコンピュータは「仏作って魂入れず」と言えるかもしれません。

オペレーティングシステムとは、コンピュータを制御し、アプリケーションソフトなどがコンピュータ資源を利用可能にするためのソフトウェアのことである。「OS」と略されることが多い。
オペレーティングシステムは、入出力の制御、メモリやハードディスクなどのハードウェアの管理、プロセスの管理といった、コンピュータの基本的な管理・制御を行っている。アプリケーションソフトウェアは、オペレーティングシステムが提供する機能を利用して動作する。
コンピュータのユーザーインターフェースがCUIであるかGUIであるか、プロセス管理方式はシングルタスクかマルチタスクか、また、ファイルシステムやネットワーク管理には何を採用しているか、といった事柄は、オペレーティングシステムによって規定されている。アプリケーションソフトは、オペレーティングシステムが提供するユーザーインターフェースを共通で利用することができるため、基本的に統一された操作方法・操作感が提供できる。
PC向けのオペレーティングシステムの代表的な製品としては、Windows、Mac OS、UNIX、Linuxなどを挙げることができる。中でもWindowsは、一連のシリーズ(Windows系OS)を合わせると市場の90%以上のシェアを持つといわれている。
なお、オペレーティングシステムはハードウェアを管理するためのものであるため、基本的に一つのマシンに一つだけ搭載できる。ただ、仮想的に他のオペレーティングシステムの機能や動作を再現するためのソフトウェアを利用することによって、例えばWindowsマシン上でUNIXの環境を利用する、といったことも可能となる。
オペレーティングシステムは、PCだけでなく、サーバーやスーパーコンピュータ、PDA、携帯電話、デジタルカメラ、産業用機械や生活家電に至るまで、さまざまなコンピュータ機器に搭載されている。
オペレーティングシステムの種類のいくつかは、バージョンや派生といった観点から系統だててWindows系OS、UNIX系OS、Linux系OS、Solaris系OS、BSD系OSなどに分類されることがある。また、汎用機やワークステーションなど、特定のハードウェア専用のオペレーティングシステムが開発・搭載されることも珍しくない。また、Linuxは、オープンソースソフトウェア(OSS)として公開されておりカーネルの安定性にも優れていることから、携帯電話や組み込み機器などに利用されることも多い。

OperatingSystem クラスには、オペレーティング システムに関する情報が格納されます。たとえば、Environment.OSVersion プロパティは、OperatingSystem オブジェクトで現在実行中のオペレーティング システムに関する情報を返します。
OperatingSystem クラスは、一般的な用途でオペレーティング システムを記述する手段としてデザインされているわけではないため、OperatingSystem クラスから、より包括的な型を派生することはできません。オペレーティング システムに関するその他の情報を格納する型が必要な場合は、独自の型を作成し、OperatingSystem 型のフィールドと追加フィールド、必要なプロパティまたはメソッドを含めます。
