道徳と宗教
多くの宗教は、道徳的規範の指示を教典に含んでおり、文化ごとの差に影響を与えている。例えば、キリスト教やユダヤ教などでは、安息日には祈り以外のことをしてはならない。イスラム教では、厳密にはキリスト教でも、偶像崇拝をしてはならない。もっとも、どのような教義でも受け入れられているわけではない。レビ記には奴隷制度を容認する記述があるが、そのような規範は受け入れられていない。
キリスト教福音派の中には、延命治療の中止のようなあらゆる種類の安楽死と、緊急避妊薬を含むあらゆる種類の人工妊娠中絶を不道徳的で殺人として扱うように主張する人もいる。ローマ・カトリック教会はコンドームの使用を性道徳を破壊すると非難する。
しばしば宗教は道徳の根源であり、宗教の拒絶は社会の崩壊につながると主張される。アラ・ノレンザヤンによれば、平均すると宗教的な人のほうがボランティアやチャリティーに協力する割合が高いようである（これは宗教と道徳性の因果関係については何も述べていない。非宗教的な慈善組織のメンバーもそれと同じくらい利他的に振る舞う[15]）。動物の権利、国際援助、中絶や安楽死といった近年の道徳的洞察に、宗教は寄与していないと主張する[16]。彼らは、世俗的ヒューマニズムのような宗教的権威に頼らない道徳を模索した。一部の心理学者、人類学者の視点によれば、道徳心は宗教よりも先に存在しており、道徳を扱うことができるような人間の心の認知構造が宗教を編みだし、伝えることを可能にしている[17]。現代の日本の道徳と宗教の関係を、イギリスの文化人類学者は、宗教が道徳の根源になっていない事を認めている[18]。思想・良心・信教の自由を定めた、現在の日本国憲法の制定が、歴史上の境と解釈されるが、それ以前の日本の社会を、小泉八雲は、宗教と道徳と法律と慣習の間に区別がない、圧制の社会と表現している[19][20]。
