「morality」は、道徳や倫理といった概念を表す英語の単語である。社会や文化、宗教などによって定められた行動規範や価値観を指し、個々の行動や選択が善悪、正誤を問われる基準となる。例えば、「morality」は法律が規定する以上の、人間としての行動や態度を問う場合に用いられる。「morality」の発音・読み方

道徳(どうとく)は、英: morality(羅: moralitas, 原義は「習慣・適切な振舞い」)の訳語に当てられたものである。漢語における「道徳」は、もともとは中国の古典を由来とする観念であり、「道」と「徳」という2つの考えからなる。道とは、人が従うべきルールのことであり、徳とは、そのルールを守ることができる状態をいう[1]。道徳的規範(どうとくてききはん)や道徳性(どうとくせい)ともいう。あるいは類義語の倫理(りんり、英: ethics、エシクスまたはエシックス)はいくつかの意味をもち、道徳を表すことが多い。
