経済
アテネはテッサロニキ以前に経済的にギリシャでは最も重要な都市ある。主にサービス産業の多くの企業が、市内に本社または主要なオフィスを構えている。本社がしばしば租税回避地に位置しているものの、商船はギリシャとっては未だに重要であるが、再びピレウスなど近隣都市で見つけることが出来る。ギリシャの経済活動はアテネおよびその周辺地域に集中している。アテネ首都圏にある大企業にはコングロマリットで冶金やエネルギー関連のミティリネオスホールディング（Μυτιληναίος Α.Ε.）や鉱業や重工業関連のヴィオファルコ（Βιοχάλκο Α.Ε.）、世界的な飲料メーカーコカ・コーラのギリシャ法人ギリシャ・コカ・コーラ（Coca-Cola Ελληνική Εταιρεία Εμφιαλώσεως Α.Ε.）、建築原材料メーカーのタイタン・セメント（Τσιμέντα Titan）や投資会社のマフィン・インベストメントグループ（Marfin Α.Ε.Π.Ε.Υ.）などがある。20の大企業はアテネ証券取引所のFTSE / Athexにリストされている。製造業の意義はアテネでは失われてしまっているが、今でもアテネ首都圏ではギリシャの総生産の50%前後を占める。伝統的な工業品には陶器や繊維産業であるが現在ではあまり意義がなくなっている。良く知られた商品にはフェージのヨーグルト、Metaxaのブランデー、チョコレート、化粧品などがある。2005年には年間600万人の海外からの観光客が訪れ、アテネにとって観光収入は無視できない収入源となっている。ドイツからの訪問客も多くいるが、現在ではギリシャに関して否定的な報道もあるため落ち込む場合もあり、最近では東アジアでもとくに中国からの訪問客が増加している[65]。なお、日本からギリシャへの観光客数は2005年以降、変動幅が大きい[66]。
