身長（しんちょう）は、人間（ヒト）が直立した時の、床又は地面から頭頂までの高さ。身の丈（みのたけ）、上背（うわぜい）、背丈（せたけ）、立っ端（たっぱ）とも言う。通常、メートル法[1][2]を使用する場合はセンチメートルで[3]、インペリアル法を使用する場合はフィートとインチで表され、測点計を使用して測定される[4][5]。背骨と背骨の間にある椎間板が負荷の有無によって膨らんだり縮んだりすることで身長は約0.6〜3cm変化する。そのため、起床直後は身長が一番高い値になり、就寝前が最も測定値が低くなる[6][7]。

  1. ^ 身長と並んで、身体の大きさを示すためにしばしば用いられる指標が体重である。
  2. ^ 健康診断などで行う身体測定などでは、一般に、足裏をべたにつけた状態で測定したものを「身長」と呼ぶように規定されている。forefoot（つま先）だけをつけた状態で立つと頭頂の位置が上がる。女性はハイヒールを履いて活動している状態では、実際にはつま先だけを地面につけた状態（つま先立ちの状態）になっているのと同等で、かなり頭頂の位置は高くなっている。犯罪現場付近での容疑者の便宜的な特定、監視カメラ映像の人物同定などでは、（便宜的に）健康診断での身長とは異なって（足裏をべたにつけるとする規定とは異なった）数値が用いられている場合もある。
  3. ^ 体表面積は体の大きさ、例えば身長もしくは全長の2乗に比例して増減するが、体積は3乗に比例するので、体が大きくなると表面積より体積の増加量が増え、体温の保持に都合が良い。
  4. ^ 近現代以前には身長の測定は行なわれていなかったから、これらの数字は発掘された古人骨からの推定値である[57]。
  5. ^ 近現代になって照明器具が発達し、夜間も昼間と同じように明るい環境となった事により、昼間の時間が長くなったと同じ作用が人体に働き、それに伴って内分泌が変化して身長の伸びを促進したとする考え。成長ホルモンは睡眠中に活発に分泌されるという説と矛盾するが、身長を決定する因子が非常に複雑に入り組んでいる可能性を考えれば、あり得ない説ではない。

「藤堂平助」の記事における「身長」の解説

当時でも小柄な体格 阿部十郎（阿部隆明）の証言 「 藤堂平助は小兵でございますけれども……」 江戸幕末期の成人男性の平均身長は155〜157cmほど といわれているので、「小兵」と評された平助の身長はおよそ153cm前後であったと推測される。 愛刀の上総介兼重は二尺四寸五分（およそ73cm）もある長寸の打刀で、本来であれば身長180cm前後の男性に最適な長さの刀である。驚くべきことに平助は自分の身長の半分ほどもある長さの刀を手足のように自在に振るい、死線をくぐり抜けていたことになる。

「北斗の拳」の記事における「身長」の解説

『北斗の拳』世界の人々は、子供を除き平均身長がかなり高い。作中では180cm台のケンシロウでも「チビヤロウ」呼ばわりされている。中には10m以上あるようにしか見えない者（デビル・リバース）が登場することもある。 現実の成人男性よりもかなり大きな体格や、逆に小さな体格として描写される人物たちに関しては、作画担当の原哲夫は「体のサイズを誇張して描くことで、人物の勢いや印象がわかるように調節しているだけであり、フィクションとはいえ身長5mや10mの人間が作中で生活しているような想定は特にしていない」という趣旨のコメントをしている。作中に登場する巨大な馬である黒王号も作者はこの類の単なる誇張として大きく描いたと証言している。
