ヨークシャー^[1]（Yorkshire 英[ˈjɔːkʃə]、米[ˈjɔɚkʃiɚ]^[2]^[3]）は、イングランドの北部にある地方である。一地方としてはイングランドで最大の面積をもち、様々な固有の文化を持っている。

^ 「イギリスの連合王国全体」に対する面積比では約6.4%となり、日本に当てはめると「四国4県＋岡山県」ほどの比率になる。
^ このほかの説としては、エボラクムを建都したローマの第9ヒスパナ軍団がヒスパニア（現在のスペインやポルトガル）出身者で占められており、ポルトガルのエヴォラの町に由来すると考えるものもいる。^[24]^[25]^[26]。

^ ハンバー川より南の地域を「サウサンブリア(Southumbria)」とする表現もある。歴史節で述べるように、七王国時代のノーサンブリア王国は最盛期にほぼイングランド全土を支配下におさめており、属国である南の民を「サウサンブリア人」と呼んでいた^[53]。
^ アエガスの滝は1991年の映画『ロビン・フッド』の撮影地にもなっている。

^ 速いと言っても、多くの川が急流の日本の河川に比べると緩やかである。
^ 英語では単に「Pennines」と書く。日本語での呼称には「ペニン」「ペナン」「ペナイン」に「山脈」や「山地」をつけることがあるが、おおむね2000フィート（約600m）、一番高い山でも893mである。2000m級の山がたくさんある日本における「山脈」「山地」感とは隔たりがある。

^ 日本では一般的に「ヨークシャー炭田」というが、この炭田は「ヨークシャー」全域にあるわけではなく、英語圏では「サウスヨークシャー炭田(South Yorkshire Coalfield)」と呼ぶことが多いようだ。
^ ムーアには「湿原」「荒野」などの訳語があてられることがある^[74]。ノース・ヨーク・ムーアの中には数々のムーアがあり、原語は「Moors」と複数形だが、ここでは「ムーア」とした。日本語文献では、比較的古いものは「ムーア」、新しいものは「ムーアズ」「ムアズ」などの表記が行われている。
^ 「vale」は「valley」の雅語で、「valley」は日本語では「谷」「谷間」「盆地」「山間平地」「（大河の）流域」「くぼみ」などの訳語が当てられる。ここでは『全訳　世界の地理教科書シリーズ3　イギリス』にしたがい「ピカリング平野」とした。なお同書では「ピカリング谷」の語も使われている。^[81]^[74]

^ 主にライアス紀(Lias)やコイパー紀(Keuper)の泥岩・泥灰岩(Marl)^[74]。
^ 『全訳　世界の地理教科書シリーズ3　イギリス』では「ホルダーネス低地」、Encyclopaedia Britannicaでは「peninsula（半島）」かつ「region（地域）」とあり、ここでは「Holderness」単独で地域を表す固有名詞として「ホルダネス」とした。^[87]^[74]
^ 難を逃れて外国へ渡っていた王族がヨーク地方の貴族を味方につけてイングランドに帰還する地としてしばしば登場し、1399年に帰国したヘンリー4世、1471年に帰国したエドワード4世などが有名。シェイクスピア作品では『リチャード二世』、『ヘンリー四世第1部』に登場する。
^ 「ヨークシャー炭田」という呼称はもっぱら日本でのもので、イングランドでは「South Yorkshire Coalfield（南ヨークシャー炭田）」（炭田はヨークシャー全域に広がっているわけではない）、あるいは「ヨークシャー・レスターシャー・ダービーシャー炭田」（炭田はヨークシャー南西部からレスターシャー、ダービーシャーと連なっている）などと表現されている。
^ Dairyはイギリス風の発音で「デイリー^[138]」と転記する文献と、アメリカ風の発音で「デアリー^[139]」とする文献があり、ここでは「デイリー」とした。

^ イミンガムやグリムズビーは古典的な地方区分(Historic counties of England)では「ヨークシャー」ではなく「リンカンシャー（リンーカン地方）」だが、1990年代の再編によって生まれた新地方区分のもとでは「ヨークシャー・アンド・ザ・ハンバー」としてヨーク地方と一体になっている。
^ ウェロカトゥスはarmour-bearer（よろい持ち）、つまり鎧を身に付ける際に手伝いをする従者。タキトゥスは『同時代史(Historiae)』の中で、王族と小姓のよろい持ちでは大きく身分に隔たりがあり、この醜聞は部族社会をずいぶんと動揺させた、と記している。^[167]

^ ヴァイキングの君主はいろいろといたが、なかでも最大勢力だったのがヨルヴィック王国の王である。
