日本との関連

1990年、千葉県が同州と姉妹県州の提携を行った。この提携には野田市に本社を置き、醤油などの食品製造を営むキッコーマンが同州に直接投資し、1973年に初の海外生産拠点となるアメリカ工場を建てた事と関っている^[84]。その後、民間姉妹交流組織「千葉ウィスコンシン協会」が設立されて同州にいる。この州はドイツ系が多いため、第二次大戦中は州出身の兵はドイツ戦線でなく、日本戦線へ送られることが多かった。そのためか、日本体験を持つ元兵士は、少なからず存在する。州には、今でもその子孫の日系人も住んでいるという。この州で生まれたローラ・インガルス・ワイルダーの『大草原の小さな家』は日本でテレビ放映され、大人気となった。この原作の第一作『大きな森の小さな家』の大きな森とは、ウィスコンシン州ペピン (Pepin) 周辺である。また、日本のフジテレビ系で放送された世界名作劇場の『あらいぐまラスカル』も、ウィスコンシン州を舞台としたアニメ作品でもある。

ウィスコンシン大学マディソン校は大学院が充実し、日本からの留学生も200人在籍しており日本語教育専攻が有名である。シボイガンにあるレイクランド大学が1991年にレイクランド大学ジャパン・キャンパスを開設していて、毎年に留学生が渡米している。
