ティナ・スミス
前身のミネソタ準州から1858年5月11日に合衆国32番目の州に昇格した。北部はカナダ、東側はウィスコンシン州に、西側はノースダコタ州とサウスダコタ州に、南側はアイオワ州に接している。州の北東部はスペリオル湖に接していて、ミシシッピ川は州北西部から南東に向かって流れ、州南東部ではウィスコンシン州との州境を構成している。州都は1807年に築かれたフォート・スネリング砦やカセドラル・オブ・セントポールなど、歴史ある建造物や荘厳なビクトリア調の建物が残るセントポール市である。ミシシッピ川を挟んだ隣市である、高層ビルが建ち並ぶ近代都市で、州最多の人口を抱えるミネアポリス市と合わせて「ツインシティーズ（双子の都市）」と呼ばれている。州人口の60%近くがこの都市圏に住んでおり、交通、事業、工業、教育、行政の中心である。州西部にあったプレーリーは農業用地に変えられ、南東部にあった落葉樹林も伐採され農業に使われている。人口の少ない北部森林地帯は鉱業、林業およびレクリエーションに使われている。また、州自体が豊かな自然に恵まれた全米有数の寒冷地でもある。
