アバカス（英: abacus）は、棒または溝に沿ってカウンター（となる玉）をスライドさせて計算を実行するための器具[2]。計算をする目的で使うシンプルな道具であり、玉（ビーズ）が滑るワイヤーあるいは溝が並んだ枠組みで構成されているもの[3]。

- ^ 1938年以前にそろばんを習得した人々は、基本的には自分用の「上1、下5」そろばんを所有していて、それで訓練を受けてそれに馴染んでいたので、かなり長い年月そちらを使いつづけた。それが破損するなどして買い換えることになった時に、しかたなく「上1、下4」そろばんを買った。だが、「上1、下4」のほうが使い方がいくらか難しく、計算作業がシビアなので（「計算途中で、操作が難しければ、仮に、一玉を5個置く（こともできる）」という選択肢が無くなったので）、彼らは戸惑うことになった。
