性別性別の概要

社会的・心理的性別に関してはジェンダーを参照

（生物学的な）性別の様式は多様である。遺伝的に染色体で決定している種（ほ乳類一般）、発生時の周囲の温度など環境によって決定する種（カメ、ワニなどは虫類の多く）、個体の大きさによって決定する種（ウラシマソウ、テンナンショウなど）、齢によって決定する種（メロン、キュウリなど）、周りに存在する同種異個体との相互関係により決定する種（クマノミ、ホンソメワケベラ）などが知られている。詳しくは性決定を参照のこと。
