タクシー運転手は、「回送」の意(海藻にかけて)または酔っ払いの客の意(ゆらゆら揺れている事から)で"わかめ"を用いることがある[要出典]。また陰毛を表す隠語として用いられることもある(わかめ酒)[要出典]。コンパクトカセットやマイクロカセット、DAT、VHS、ベータカセットなどの磁気テープメディアが損傷した時に形状がワカメのようにくしゃくしゃになってしまうことから、"わかめ"とよばれることもある[要出典]。

また劇場などで使われた隠語から、子供を指す蔑称として「ジャリ」が使われることもある。丸刈りが主流だった時代、子供客の集まりを劇場の上から見下ろすと、砂利のように見えたことから。
