RCSとは、GSMAにおいて標準化が進められている、従来のショートメッセージ（SMS）に替わる次世代の（テキストベースの）インスタントメッセージの規格である。
RCSを簡略に述べるとすればSMSがIM（インスタントメッセンジャー）の要素を取り入れ進化したようなものと言い得る。テキストだけでなくマルチメディアのやりとりも可能で、1対1だけでなく1対多のやりとり（グループチャット）も可能、専用アプリを必要とすることもなく、同じキャリアの利用者に限定されたりすることなく、専用のユーザーIDが必要となることもなく、キャリアがRCSに対応していれば電話番号を宛先に用いてリッチな情報のやりとりが実現する。
2018年4月に、ドコモ、au、ソフトバンクという日本の大手キャリア3社が共同でRCSを用いた新サービス「プラスメッセージ」の提供を開始すると発表し、RCSそのものにも注目が集まっている。

リッチコミュニケーションサービス（Rich Communication Services、RCS）とは、音声通話やショートメッセージサービスなどを代替することを目的とした高機能なサービス、あるいはそれを実現する規格である。
