「tense」とは、張りつめた・緊張したことを意味する英語表現である。

「tense」とは、英語の形容詞で筋肉の張った、緊張したという意味である。名詞として使われる場合は時制である。複数形では「tenses」となる。

１ 蚊帳・提灯(ちょうちん)・テント・幕などを数えるのに用いる。「行灯(あんどん)一—」

２ 弓・琴など、弦を張った類のものを数えるのに用いる。

《tense》動詞の表す動作・作用の時間関係を表す文法範疇(はんちゅう)。現在・過去・未来のほか、言語によっては、完了・不完了過去（過去における継続・繰り返しの行為を表す）・過去完了・未来完了などを区別するものもある。時相。
