カーニング（英語: kerning）とは、主に欧文の組版において、プロポーショナルフォントの文字同士の間隔（アキ）を調整する技法のこと。カーニングを行わない場合は、文字の間に不自然な空白を招いてしまう。適切にカーニングが施されたフォントでは、字面間の空白の面積がほぼ均等になる。
- ^ Adobeの定義[3]によれば、カーニングは特定の文字の組合せに合わせてアキを調整すること。字送りと文字ツメは一連のテキストに対して等しくアキを調整すること。字送りは文字の右側だけを狭くする機能であり、欧文に用いられる。文字ツメは文字の両側を調整する機能であり、和文に用いられる。
- ^ ただし、トラッキングを「トラック・カーニング」、隣り合う文字の組合せごとの調整を「ペアワイズ・カーニング」としていずれもカーニングに含める場合もある[2]
