にし‐ローランドゴリラ【西ローランドゴリラ】

読み方：にしろーらんどごりら

ニシゴリラの一亜種。カメルーン・中央アフリカ共和国・赤道ギニア・ガボン・コンゴ共和国・コンゴ民主共和国・アンゴラの低地熱帯雨林や沼沢林に生息。ゴリラ属の中では最も生息数が多い。

アフリカ中西部の熱帯雨林

体の大きさ

体重は野生のオスで140～180kgですが、動物園では250kgにもなった例があります。メスは90kgくらいです。

えさ

たけのこやセロリなどの繊維質の多い植物を好みます。動物園では、りんご、みかん、トマト、バナナ、にんじん、さつまいも、キャベツ、ヨーグルト、脱脂粉乳などをあたえています。

特徴

ヒトをふくむサルの仲間で最も大きな体をしています。外見はどう猛そうですが、動物質のものをほとんど食べない「菜食主義者」です。興奮したり、きげんのよいときに、手のひらで胸をたたくドラミングとよばれる動作をし、ポコポコというよい音が出ます。
