ラーテル（Mellivora capensis）は、イタチ科に分類される哺乳類。本種のみでラーテル属を構成する。別名ミツアナグマ。
注釈
- ^ 動物名を表す thegere を、キクユ語・英語辞書である Benson (1964) は badger（詳細は後述）やラーテル（ratel）と訳す[16]一方、キクユ族の寓話を主題とするイタリア語文献 Pick (1967) はヨーロッパケナガイタチ（イタリア語: puzzola; 学名: Mustela putorius）やエジプトマングース（イタリア語: icneumone; 学名: Herpestes ichneumon）[17]、キクユ語のことわざを取り上げた Njũrũri (1969) と Wanjohi (2001) はいずれもイタチ（英語: weasels; 学名: Mustela sp.）と訳している[18][19]。IUCN (2017) によるといずれの生物も食肉目であるが、英語名で weasel と名が付くイタチ科の生物でキクユ族が暮らすケニアに固有のものは ゾリラ（英語: zorilla あるいは striped weasel; 学名: Ictonyx striatus）やゾリラモドキ（英語: African striped weasel; 学名: Poecilogale albinucha）が見られるが、ヨーロッパケナガイタチを含むイタチ科イタチ属（Mustela）はケニアにおける固有の種は一種も見られない[20]。一方、英語の badger はイタチ科の生物のうちアナグマ属 (Meles)、アメリカアナグマ属 (Taxidea)、イタチアナグマ属 (Melogale)、ブタバナアナグマ属 (Arctonyx)、そしてラーテル属 (Mellivora) の総称であるが、この中でケニアに固有のものは honey badger の別名を持つラーテルのみである（分布図を参照）[20]。
