「spatial」は、ラテン語「spatium」と形容詞化の接尾辞「-al」を合わせた語である。英語では「space（空間）」の形容詞として形成された。spaceの語源は、古フランス語「espace（期間、距離、間隔）」、ラテン語「spatium（部屋、面積、距離、時間の伸び）」である。

「spatial」の発音・読み方

「spatial」の発音記号は「speɪ.ʃəl」であり、前半「-pa-」にアクセントが置かれる。カタカナで表記する場合、「スペイシャゥル」のような音。アメリカ英語とイギリス英語で同じ発音記号である。

「Spatial」と「spacial」の違い

「Spatial」と「spacial」は、どちらも「空間の」を意味する表現。「spacial」は「spatial」と同じ意味で、異なるスペルで表記される単語である。しかし一部には、「spacial」は「宇宙空間の」という意味で、物理空間を指す「spatial」とは別の単語とする考えもある。

Spatial社は、メタバース空間のプラットフォーム「Spatial(スペーシャル)」を提供する、米国のスタートアップ企業である。Spatialでは、アーティストがバーチャルギャラリーを作ったり、NFTを利用したデジタルコンテンツを販売することができる。またチャットツールの「SpatialChat（スペーシャルチャット）」では、アバターを介して複数のユーザーと同じ空間を共有し、既存のビデオチャットとは違ったVRのコミュニケーションを楽しむことができる。

「spatial planning」とは

「spatial planning」とは、空間計画を意味する英熟語で、次のように用いられる。「Spatial planning for energy sources and the food market are in turmoil because agriculture is being used to supply energy.（農業がエネルギー供給に利用されているため、エネルギー源の空間計画や食料市場は混乱している）」「The proposed sub-regions are broad areas which each have key economic features in common and therefore offer a basis for spatial planning.（サブリージョンとは、経済の主要な特徴を共通に持ち、空間計画の基礎となる広範な地域のことである）」

「spatial axis」とは

「spatial axis」とは、空間軸を意味する英熟語である。以下のような表現がある。「In case of spatial axis of the historical landscape district, the past and present were concentrated within only hundred-meter distance.（歴史的景観地区の空間軸で捉えれば、過去と現在がわずか100メートルほどの距離に集中している）」

「spatial integration」とは

「spatial integration」とは、「空間的統合」を意味する英熟語である。生物学に関する文章では、以下のように用いられる。「Spatial integration of the nutrient acquisition system exists in P. gingivalis, in which where dipeptides are produced and readily transported across the inner membrane.（口腔細菌では、ジペプチドが生産され、内膜を越えて容易に輸送される、栄養獲得システムの空間的統合が存在する）」

「spatial」の使い方・例文

空間戦略という表現では、次のように用いられる。「He led a meeting place debate on June on planning policy, following the government's decision to scrap regional spatial strategies.（政府が地域空間戦略の廃止を決定したことを受け、計画政策に関する集会所での討論を、6月に開催した）」

空間認識や空間への意識という表現では、次のように使用される。「Although there is not one specific DIY gene, spatial awareness is vital in understanding how shapes fit together and is therefore fundamental to DIY skills.（特定のDIY遺伝子があるわけではないが、空間認識は形がどのように組み合わされるかを理解するのに不可欠であり、DIYスキルの基礎となる）」「'No manspreading': Some people are calling on train to start a campaign encouraging greater spatial awareness among the capital's commuters.（大股座りをしないで - 首都圏の電車で通勤している人たちに、もっと空間に対する意識を高めてほしいという声もある）」
