アバカス(英: abacus)は、棒または溝に沿ってカウンター(となる玉)をスライドさせて計算を実行するための器具[2]。計算をする目的で使うシンプルな道具であり、玉(ビーズ)が滑るワイヤーあるいは溝が並んだ枠組みで構成されているもの[3]。

- ^ 昭和30年代ころまでに青年期を迎えた人は、「1を表す玉(一玉)が5つ」のそろばんの使い方を知っている。(彼らの親や祖父母、つまり明治時代や大正時代を生きた人々から教えられた。)平成時代以降の若者はほぼ全員、「1を表す玉(一玉)が5つ」のそろばんの使い方を親や祖父母から教わったこともないので、知らない。その結果、中国式のそろばんを、あろうことか「十六進用だった」などと誤解する。
- ^ 1938年以前にそろばんを習得した人々は、基本的には自分用の「上1、下5」そろばんを所有していて、それで訓練を受けてそれに馴染んでいたので、かなり長い年月そちらを使いつづけた。それが破損するなどして買い換えることになった時に、しかたなく「上1、下4」そろばんを買った。だが、「上1、下4」のほうが使い方がいくらか難しく、計算作業がシビアなので(「計算途中で、操作が難しければ、仮に、一玉を5個置く(こともできる)」という選択肢が無くなったので)、彼らは戸惑うことになった。
- ^ その一方で、「上1、下4」方式のそろばんは、初歩段階ではその操作の複雑さを感じさせたり、うっかり操作ミスをしてしまう確率も増すので、そろばんを嫌いになったり、挫折してしまう子供もそれなりの割合で生むようになった。
