飢え(うえ)とは、肉体的空腹感を恐れて生活しているという生物の社会的状況を表現する際に使用される言葉。飢えが生命の危機レベルなモノを飢餓と呼ぶ[1]。
注釈
- ^ 重度の食料不安(Severe food insecurity)は、食料に窮し、飢餓に直面し、最悪の場合丸一日あるいは数日間何も食べていない状況が続いて、自らの健康および幸福(well being)が非常に危うい状態にある、深刻な食料不安のレベル。
中程度の食料不安(Moderate food security)は、自身の食料獲得能力を揺るがすような不確実性に直面しており、お金やその他の資源の不足から消費する食料の質または量に妥協を強いられている深刻な食料不安のレベル。食事の質を下げ、正常な食事パターンを妨げ、結果的に栄養、健康そして幸福(well being)に負の影響を与える可能性がある、食料への継続的なアクセスが妨げられている状況を指す。

詳細は「飢え」を参照 栄養失調や飢餓は世界のいくらかの地域で永続的に問題として続いている。低い農業生産効果は内戦によってさらに悪化させられており、1990年代にソマリアで起こった飢餓状況はその代表的な例である。しかしより安定した状況であっても、幾つかの国で飢餓が続いている。飢餓のイメージは強い影響力を持ち、慈悲や軍事行動にもつながる。
