- シリアは北にトルコ、東にイラク、南にヨルダン、西にレバノン、南西にイスラエルと国境を接しており、シリア政府軍及び反政府勢力がそれぞれの国の正規軍や反政府勢力と敵対或いは共闘している。
- 自由シリア軍をはじめとする世俗反政府勢力はアル＝ヌスラ戦線をはじめとするジハード主義勢力と共闘しているが、世俗反政府勢力を支援している主権国家各国はジハード主義勢力と敵対している。
- アメリカ他による空爆支援はロシアへの遠慮からシリア政府軍には行われていない。
- シリアでは敵対しているヌスラとISISがレバノンでは共闘している。
- イスラエル国内ではイスラエル国防軍が加わるが、いずれのイスラム系勢力からも距離を置いている。
- 特にイラク国内での利害関係は極めて複雑である。
