葉酸はビタミンB群に属する水溶性（水に溶けるタイプという意味）ビタミン。血をつくる働きに関係し、不足すると貧血になることもあります。また妊娠を望んでいる女性や妊娠中の女性は、妊娠前から妊娠初期にかけて１日0.4mgの葉酸を摂取することで胎児の神経管閉鎖障害の発症リスクを低下させるとされています。体内に蓄えることがなかなかできないので、毎日摂取することが大切。緑黄色野菜、果物などに多く含まれていますが、こうした野菜などから摂取できる葉酸の量は限られているので、サプリメント（栄養補助食品）の利用が勧められます。ただし、とりすぎは禁物で、1日の摂取目安量を守ることが大切です。サプリメントなどは表示をよく確認しましょう。

【概要】 ビタミンの一種。普通は食品から吸収できるがアルコール症の患者では不足しやすい。ファンシダールやペンタミジンやST合剤など、葉酸の利用を邪魔する薬は、人間に毒性をもつ可能性があるので、葉酸を補充することがある。

葉酸（ようさん、英: folate）はビタミンB群の一種。ビタミンM、ビタミンB9、プテロイルグルタミン酸とも呼ばれる。栄養素のひとつ。水溶性ビタミンに分類される生理活性物質である。プテリジンにパラアミノ安息香酸と１つまたは複数のグルタミン酸が結合した構造を持つ。1941年に乳酸菌の増殖因子としてホウレンソウの葉から発見された。葉はラテン語で folium と呼ばれることから葉酸 (folic acid) と名付けられた[2]。葉酸は体内で還元を受け、ジヒドロ葉酸を経てテトラヒドロ葉酸に変換された後に補酵素としてはたらく。
