日本との関わり

『荒地』の衝撃は世界各国とほぼ同時期に日本へも伝わり、1925年にはイギリス留学から帰国した西脇順三郎が慶應義塾大学でエリオットを講じているほか、春山行夫らが雑誌でモダニズム文学を紹介しているが、本格的な受容は戦後になってからである^[21]。1935年には哲学者の西田幾多郎が「傳統主義に就て」^[22]という講演において、エリオットの伝統論を自身の哲学と結びつけて論じている。

1952年に西脇が『荒地』全訳を刊行、深瀬基寛や吉田健一も相次いで独自訳を発表した。第二次大戦後に活動を開始した田村隆一や鮎川信夫・加島祥造・北村太郎・中桐雅夫などの詩人には「荒地派」の名前が冠せられた^[21]。批評面では山本健吉がエリオットの伝統概念を日本の古典文学に応用した『古典と現代文学』を1955年に発表しているほか、また福田恆存は『一族再会』『カクテル・パーティー』などの詩劇に強い影響を受けてラジオドラマ『崖のうえ』などで詩と劇の融合をこころみている^[21]。

そのほか

映画『地獄の黙示録』では、ベトナム戦争従軍中に精神に異常をきたしたカーツ大佐が、エリオットの「うつろな人々」を朗読するシーンが象徴的に用いられる。
核戦争を逃れた原子力潜水艦乗組員の絶望を描く小説『渚にて (小説) 』は、題名をやはり「うつろな人々」の詩句から取っている^[23]^[24]。
