相互理解可能性

相互理解可能性（そうごりかいかのうせい、mutual intelligibility）とは、言語学において、異なってはいるが関連性のある複数の言語のそれぞれの話者が、計画的な勉強や並外れた努力無しに互いの言語を容易に理解できるとき、その言語間に存在しているとみなせる関係性のことである。相互理解性、相互了解性などとも。この性質は言語と方言を区別する基準の一つとして用いられることもあるが、これに関しては社会言語学的な要素も重要である。

1967年の相互理解可能性の調査より、関東地方出身者に最も理解しにくい方言は（琉球諸語と東北方言を除く）、富山県氷見方言（正解率4.1%）、長野県木曽方言（正解率13.3%）、鹿児島方言（正解率17.6%）、岡山県真庭方言（正解率24.7%）だった。この調査は、12 - 20秒の長さ、135 - 244の音素の老人の録音に基づいており、42名若者が聞いて翻訳した。受験者は関東地方で育った慶應大学の学生であった。 関東圏出身者に相互理解可能性（1967年）方言 大阪市 京都市 愛知県立田村 長野県木曽町新開 富山県氷見市 岡山県勝山町 高知県大方町 島根県雲城村 熊本市 鹿児島市 正解率 26.4% 67.1% 44.5% 13.3% 4.1% 24.7% 45.5% 24.8% 38.6% 17.6%
