Windows Server製品と同様に、Exchange Serverには、Windows CALに追加でクライアントアクセスライセンスが必要になる。Enterprise Agreement (EA) などの企業ライセンス契約には、Exchange Server CALが含まれている。また、Core CALスイートの一部として提供される。Windows Serverやマイクロソフトの他のサーバー製品と同様に、ユーザーCALまたはデバイスCALのどちらを使用するかを選択できる。デバイスCALは、1人以上のユーザーが使用できるデバイス（ワークステーション、ラップトップ、またはPDA）に割り当てられる[29]。ユーザーCALはユーザーに割り当てられ、ユーザーが任意のデバイスからExchangeにアクセスできるようになる。ユーザーCALとデバイスCALの価格は同だが、使われ方は異なる。
Microsoft Exchangeのホスティングを検討しているサービスプロバイダーの場合、マイクロソフトが従来のCALの代わりに月額サービス料金制のサービスプロバイダーライセンス契約（SPLA）を利用できる。Exchange CALには、Exchange CAL StandardとExchange CAL Enterpriseの2種類がある。Enterprise CALは、Standard CALのアドオンライセンスである。
Standard CALとEnterprise CALの違いはクライアントユーザー側で利用できる機能の違いであり、サーバ側のExchange Server Standard EditionとEnterprise Editionのどちらのエディションを使えるかとは関係がないので注意が必要である。
