「statutory」とは、「法廷の」や「法令の」「制定法に従う」といった法律で規定された義務や権利を示すことを意味する英語表現である。
「non statutory」とは、「法定外の」という意味の英語表現である。法的に義務付けられていない、法的な規制や制限がない、法律によって規定されていないことを指す。法律や法令によって強制されているわけではなく、任意的あるいは自発的なものである。「non statutory benefits（法定外給付）」や「non-statutory guidance（法定外ガイダンス）」などの表現ができる。
