「predecessor」の語源は、前にという意味のラテン語の「prae-」＋立ち去る人という意味の「decessor」である。ラテン語の「prae-」＋「decessor」が、先祖という意味のラテン語の「praedecessor」に変化し、先祖という意味の古期フランス語の「predecesseor」になった後、英語の「predecessor」になった。また、先行するという意味の英語の「precede」と同じ語源である。

「predecessor」と「successor」の違い

「predecessor」と「successor」は、綴りが似ているため混同しやすいが、意味が全く異なる対義語である。「predecessor」は前任者という意味であるのに対し、「successor」は後任者という意味である。また、数学用語としては、特定の数字の前の数字を「predecessor」、後ろの数字を「successor」という。「predecessor of 250」は250の前の数字という意味で249を指し、「Successor of 250」は250の次の数字という意味で251を指す。
