「scrutinize」とは、「注意深く調べる」や「精査する」「じっと見る」といった詳細に調べたり検討したりすることを意味する英語表現である。

「scrutinize」とは「scrutinize」の意味

「scrutinize」とは、細かい所まで徹底的に調べる、綿密に検査する、などの意味で用いられる動詞である。何かを細かく調べたり、注意深く観察したり、詳細に分析したりすることを表現する場合に使用される。仮定法で用いる場合は、「If he were really concerned about the issue, he could be scrutinized it more closely.（彼がその問題について本当に心配しているなら、彼はそれをもっと綿密に精査することができるだろう）」、「If I were to receive this document, I would scrutinize it carefully to ensure its accuracy.（もし私がこの書類を受け取ったら、正確性を確認するために注意深く調べるだろう）」など、「would」や「could be」を使った表現となる。また、「scrutinize」の過去形・過去分詞形は「scrutinized」である。

「scrutinize」の発音・読み方

「scrutinize」の発音は、カタカナ語では「スクルティナイズ」である。発音記号では「skrúːtənàiz」と表記されるため、カタカナにすると「スクルゥータァナァィズ」という発音になる。「ルゥー」の発音は、舌先を内側に巻き「ル」の音を出した後すぐ、唇を突き出して「ゥ」の発音をして、そのまま音を少し伸ばすと良い。

「scrutinize」の語源・由来

「scrutinize」の語源は、「徹底的に調査する」という意味のラテン語の「scrutor」である。ラテン語の「scrutor」が、徹底した捜索という意味の中世ラテン語の「scrutinium」、「精密な調査」という意味の中期英語「scrutiny」を経由し、「scrutinize」になった。

「scrutinize」と「examine」の違い

「scrutinize」と「examine」は、どちらも「調べる」という意味で用いられる類義語である。しかし、同じような意味ではあるものの、ニュアンスは少し異なる。「scrutinize」は、非常に詳細に調べることを意味し、細部まで注意深く調査することを示す。文書や証拠品を「scrutinize」する場合、ざっと調べるのではなく細部まで詳細に調べることを意味する。

一方、「examine」はある程度広い範囲で調べることを意味し、「全体的に調査する」というニュアンスがある。例えば、医師が患者を「examine」する場合、患者の健康状態全体を調べることを意味する。したがって、「scrutinize」はより詳細で深い調査を示し、「examine」はより一般的な調査を示すという点が異なる。ただし、文脈によっては、両方の単語を交換して使用することができる。

investigate：調査する、研究する
・The police are investigating the robbery that occurred last night.（警察は昨晩起きた強盗事件を調査している）
・The government launched an investigation into the company's environmental practices.（政府は、その企業の環境に関する実態の調査を開始した）
