ラグビーユニオンの歴史（ラグビーユニオンのれきし）は、19世紀よりずっと以前の様々なフットボール競技から続いているが、19世紀の中頃までは競技規則の策定および法典化はされなかった。後にラグビーユニオンの名で知られるようになるこのフットボールのコード（法典）は、1845年の最初の明文化された規則、1863年のブラックヒース・クラブのフットボール協会離脱の決定、1871年のラグビーフットボール連合（ラグビー・フットボール・ユニオン、RFU）の結成、という3つの出来事に端を発する。このコードは最初は単純に「ラグビーフットボール」として知られていた。1895年に、選手への支払い問題を一因として、ラグビー界が分裂した。これはラグビーリーグという別のコードの形成につながり、元のラグビーコードと区別するために「ラグビーユニオン」（ユニオン式ラグビーという意味）という名称が使われた。その歴史上ほとんどの時代において、ラグビーユニオンは厳格なアマチュア主義を取るフットボールコードであり、このスポーツの管理者らはプロフェッショナルと見なした選手に対して頻繁に追放処分や制限を課した。ラグビーユニオンが「開かれた」競技と宣言されたのは1995年のことで、コードの統括団体である国際ラグビーフットボール評議会（IRFB、現在のワールドラグビー）によってプロフェッショナリズムが認められた。
