ステージングとは、システムを公開する手前の段階で、実際にサービスを提供する環境（本番環境）とほぼ同じ環境にシステムを反映させ、動作や表示などの最終確認を行う段階、もしくは環境のことである。

ステージングに用いられる環境は、多くの場合「ステージング環境」と呼ばれる。ステージング環境で利用されるサーバーを特に「ステージングサーバー」と呼び、Webサイトを「ステージングサイト」と呼ぶこともある。ステージング環境に対比される言葉として、実際にユーザーが利用する「本番環境」（プロダクション環境）、開発者が開発作業に利用する「開発環境」などがある。

ステージングの段階を用意することで、開発環境では発見されなかった問題点を気づかずに公開してしまうミスの抑止が期待できる。ステージング環境は本番環境と同一か、ほぼ同一に近い条件のシステム構成であることが求められる。

開発環境からステージング環境へ、または、ステージング環境から本番環境へと、システムを反映して利用可能とする作業は、デプロイ（デプロイメント）と呼ばれている。
