恒星グリーゼ581は太陽系から約22光年の彼方にあり、近年、複数の惑星が発見されている。惑星のうち特にグリーゼ581dおよびグリーゼ581gは、ハビタブルゾーン（生命居住可能領域）に位置し、地球型惑星と推定されていたことから、水と生命が存在し得ると期待されていた。
2014年7月3日、グリーゼ581dは天体として存在しないとするPaul Robertsonらの研究結果が科学誌「Science」に掲載された。
