精留

ただ 1 回の加熱によって多数回の分縮と再蒸留を繰り返す蒸留操作で、精留塔、加熱炉（または加熱器）および凝縮器より成る装置が用いられる。精留塔内部には、多数の蒸留段（トレイ）があり、各段上で気液の接触が行われ、上昇蒸気と段上液との間で上昇蒸気中の重質留分の凝縮、段上液中の軽質留分の再蒸発が起こり、各段がそれぞれ単純蒸留釜の役目を果たしている。この精留操作により、各種炭化水素類の混合物である石油類を、沸点範囲に従って塔頂からは最も軽質な留分が抜き出せる。また、必要に応じて塔の中間段から中質留分を抜き出すことができる。常圧蒸留装置、減圧蒸留装置などの蒸留を専門とする装置のほか、その他多くのプロセスで、この操作が応用されており、石油精製工業において最も基本的な単位操作の一つである。
