ヨーロッパ加圧水型原子炉の導入をはじめて開始したのはフィンランドのオルキルオト原子力発電所である。3号機の原子炉として2005年に着工されている。2007年にはフランスのフラマンビル原子力発電所3号機、2009年には中国の台山原子力発電所でも工事が開始されている。
オルキルオト原子力発電所では、当初3年の工期が見積もられていたが、工事は度々延期されている。本式の稼動開始は2014年頃になるものと見られている。

欧州加圧水型炉（英語: European Pressure Reactor、EPR）は原子炉の設計の一種。第3世代の加圧水型原子炉。主にフラマトム（アレヴァNPを経て現在は再びフラマトム）、フランス電力、シーメンスなどが開発した。この原子炉設計は欧州では欧州加圧水型炉（英語: European Pressurized Reactor）と呼ばれ、国際的には進展型原子炉（英語: Evolutionary Power Reactor）とされているが、現在はフラマトムは単純にEPRと呼んでいる。
