性格俳優

性格俳優（せいかくはいゆう、英: character actor）は、助演俳優のうち、劇中人物の性格を巧みに演じたり、個性のある役を得意とする俳優である[2]。性格俳優は一風変わっていたり、興味深いキャラクターを演じることも多い[3][4][5][6]。

その後は1950年代から1960年代にかけていくつかの映画製作に携わった他、『ティファニーで朝食を』などの名作に重要な脇役として出演し、数回にわたりアカデミー助演男優賞の候補に挙がる。 『ティファニーで朝食を』において白人であるルーニーが演じたユニオシは日系アメリカ人という設定であるが、アメリカ社会におけるステレオタイプな悪意に満ちた日本人像（黒ぶちの眼鏡、出っ歯、低身長など）で描かれていた。 だが当時はアメリカ社会において日本人などエスニックなマイノリティに対するきわどい差別的表現やブラック・ジョークは決してタブーではなく、ルーニーや監督のブレイク・エドワーズが確信的な人種差別者（レイシスト）だったわけではない。ルーニー自身その後の人生において、人種差別的な政治的活動に参加したり展開したということではないが、負のスティグマはルーニーについて回り、俳優を続けるにあたりその演技に対する弁明をせざるを得なくなっている。
