「巨人の肩の上にのる矮人」（きょじんのかたのうえにのるわいじん、ラテン語: nani gigantum umeris insidentes [1]）という言葉は、西洋のメタファーであり、現代の解釈では、先人の積み重ねた発見に基づいて何かを発見することを指す。「巨人の肩の上に立つ」、「巨人の肩に座る」、「巨人の肩に登る」、「巨人の肩に乗る小人」、「巨人の肩に立つ侏儒」などの形でも使われる。科学者アイザック・ニュートンが1676年にロバート・フックに宛てた書簡[2]の以下の一節で知られるようになった。
