カール・コックス（英: Carl Cox、OBE、1962年7月29日[1] - ）は、イギリスのDJ、プロデューサー[2]。
略歴
バルバドス出身の両親のもとにオールダムで生まれ、幼少期をロンドン南部で過ごす[1][3]。8歳の頃から両親が所有するソウルミュージックのレコードを選曲し、家族の集まりでDJを務めるようになる[1]。その後、自分でもレコードを買い集めるようになり、14歳になる頃にはクラブに通うようになる[1][4]。15歳で初めてターンテーブルのセットを入手し、16歳になるとスーパーマーケットでの品出し、足場組み立て作業員として働きながら駆け出しのDJとして活動し始めた[1][4][5]。大学では電気工学を学んでいたが、6か月で中退[1]。
1970年代後半から1980年代前半にかけてディスコからレア・グルーヴ、ヒップホップへと移り変わる音楽のトレンドを追い、1980年代半ばにイギリスに到来したハウス・ミュージックに惹かれ、ハウスに専念するようになる[1]。1986年にブライトンへ移住し、1988年から1989年にかけてブームとなったアシッド・ハウスのシーン、レイヴ・カルチャー、セカンド・サマー・オブ・ラブでDJとして注目を浴びるようになる[1][2][3]。ロンドンのクラブイベント「Shoom」のオープニング・ナイトでプレイしたほか、1989年にバッキンガムシャーで開催された野外イベント「Sunrise」では1万5000人の観衆を前に3台のターンテーブルを駆使したミックスを初披露した[1][5]。3台目のターンテーブルは本来は予備用のものであったが、使用し始めたことによって「3台使いの魔術師（three-deck wizard）」として知られるようになった[4]。
1992年までにポール・オークンフォールドが主宰するレーベル「Perfecto Records」と長期制作契約を結び、デビュー・シングル「I Want You (Forever)」が全英シングルチャートで23位を記録[1]。セカンド・シングル「Does It Feel Good to You」の発売を経て自身のレーベル「Worldwide Ultimatum」を設立[1]。1995年にミックス・コンピレーション・シリーズ『F.A.C.T.: Future Alliance of Communication & Technology』を発売し、25万枚以上を売り上げる[1][2][5]。1996年に初のフルスタジオ・アルバム『At the End of the Cliché』を発売し、1997年に『F.A.C.T.』の第2弾を発売[1]。1996年と1997年には『DJ Magazine』で「世界No.1 DJ」に選出された[6]。
1998年にミックス・アルバム『The Sound of Ultimate B.A.S.E.』を発売[1]。1999年にレーベル「Intec Records」を設立し、スタジオ・アルバム『Phuture 2000』を発売[1][5]。2000年にシカゴのクラブ「Crobar」で録音されたライブ・ミックス盤『Mixed Live』を発売し、2001年にはラジオ番組『Global』を開始した[1]。2005年にノーマン・クックやケビン・サンダーソンが参加したスタジオ・アルバム『Second Sign』を発売[1]。アメリカのウルトラ・ミュージック・フェスティバルには毎年出演し、2005年より自身のステージ「Carl Cox & Friends」を主催[1][7][8]。2010年初頭に「Intec Records」を「Intec Digital」としてレーベルを再始動させ、2011年に4作目のアルバム『All Roads Lead to the Dancefloor』を発売[1][5][9]。
2016年、2001年より15年連続で行っていたイビサ島のクラブ「SPACE IBIZA」でのイベント「Music Is Revolution」をクラブ閉店とともに終了した[5][10]。2017年にはラジオ番組『Global』が終了[1]。2018年3月にはマーティン・ギャリックスと共に制作したエレクトロニック・ダンス・ミュージックの現在、過去、未来を探求するドキュメンタリー映画『What We Started』を公開[5]。同年夏にイビサ島の様々なクラブで計6回の公演を行った[5]。2021年以降の新型コロナウイルスのパンデミック期間中はライブDJセットの配信「Carl Cox’s Cabin Fever」を開始し、自伝『Oh Yes, Oh Yes』を刊行した[1][4]。2022年にはウェンブリー・アリーナでの公演を行い、5作目のスタジオ・アルバム『Electronic Generations』を発売[1]。
2026年6月12日、イギリスの国王誕生記念叙勲者名簿において、長年にわたり芸術、科学、慈善活動、公共サービスなどにおいて優れた功績や地域社会への奉仕を行った人物に贈られる大英帝国勲章「Officer of the Order of the British Empire（OBE）」が授与された[10]。
音楽性
アシッド・ハウス、ハウス、レイヴ、テクノ、プログレッシブ・ハウス、テックハウスまでをフォローし、ハード・テクノを軸としたセットの中でブレイクビーツやイタリアン・ハウス、メインストリームのダンスミュージックまでを取り入れている[1]。
モータースポーツ
オートバイを愛好していたことから、2013年にモータースポーツチーム「カール・コックス・モータースポーツ」を設立[3]。
2023年1月に電動オフロードレースシリーズ「エクストリームE」の2023年シーズンに新規参戦することを発表し、ドライバーとしてクリスティーヌ・GZとティモ・シャイダーを起用[11][12]。同チームは第3戦で3位に入り、初の表彰台を獲得した[13]。第4戦では予選中にマシンが損傷したため、レースを棄権[13]。7月には、故ケン・ブロックの娘であるリア・ブロックがクリスティーヌ・GZに代わって第5戦からシーズン終了まで出場[14]。チームはデビューシーズンをチーム選手権9位で終えた[15]。
