- ^ 「生物体は個体群を構成する要素である」という言い方は、一見して上位概念を用いて下位概念を説明できているように見えるが、「個体群は生物体によって構成されるものである（下位概念で上位概念を説明している）」と同義であり、生物体が何によって構成されているかを説明できていない。
- ^ 例えば、ヒトの脳細胞に消化酵素を分泌する機能を付け加えようとすると（細胞の階層）、「脳で食物を消化できる」という事実が発生する。しかし脳は本来消化器官ではないため、その器官について脳ではない何かを指すものとする新たな定義が必要となる（器官の階層）。更に、その新器官が神経中枢だけでなく消化機能も持つことから、新器官を消化器系に組み入れる必要があるほか、口から頭へつながる食道に相当するものの存在や、元々ある胃との関係まで説明しなければならなくなる（器官系の階層）。すると、神経系の中枢と消化機能を同時に果たす器官を持つ生物は生物学的に明らかに特異な性質を持っているため、その生物についてヒト以外の新たな定義を加えなければならない（生物体の階層）。これらの問題はヒトについて「神経の中枢機能と食物の一次消化を同じ器官で果たす動物」という客体を設定（客体の変更）すれば済む話だが、この場合、元々ヒトと呼ばれていた動物との整合性が問題となる。
