がん細胞は、自分の栄養補給のために動脈につながる血管を新たに生じさせることがあります。この栄養補給路（新生血管と呼びます）を閉じることにより、がん細胞を衰えさせる治療方法のことです。具体的には、局部麻酔を施し、足の付け根から血管に細い管を挿入して病巣部に薬などを注入します。副作用が少なく、外来治療も可能です。転移したがんやリウマチに対し有効な治療法といわれています。ただし、血管内治療を行える施設は少なく、自費診療扱いのため治療代は高くなっています。また、生存率の向上に結びついているかどうかも、まだわかっていません。施設によっては、動注療法のことを血管内治療と呼ぶ場合もあるようです。
