第2代ジャージー伯爵ウィリアム・ヴィリアーズ(1682-1721)の次男であり、第4代クラレンドン伯(第1期)ヘンリー・ハイドの孫娘の夫にあたるトマス・ヴィリアーズ(1709-1786)は、外交官としてザクセン公使（在職：1740年 - 1747年）、ウィーン公使（在職：1742年 - 1743年）、ベルリン公使（在職：1746年 - 1748年）などを歴任した後、ホイッグ党の政治家として政界で活躍し、郵政長官（英語版）（在職：1763年 - 1765年、1786年）やランカスター公領大臣（在職：1771年 - 1782年、1783年 - 1786年）などの閣僚職を務めた。1756年6月3日にグレートブリテン貴族爵位「ウィルトシャー州におけるヒンドンのハイド男爵(Baron Hyde, of Hindon in the County of Wiltshire)」、1776年6月14日にグレートブリテン貴族爵位クラレンドン伯爵に叙せられた。これが二期目のクラレンドン伯爵位の創設である。 その孫である4代クラレンドン伯ジョージ・ヴィリアーズ(1800-1870)もホイッグ党・自由党の政治家として政界で活躍し、外務大臣（在職：1853年 - 1858年、1865年 - 1866年、1868年 - 1870年）などの閣僚職を歴任した。 2016年現在の当主は8代クラレンドン伯ジョージ・ヴィリアーズ(1976-)である。 一家の屋敷はハンプシャーのスワンモア（英語版）のホリウェル・ハウス(Holywell House)である。
