西暦紀元

西暦紀元（せいれききげん、羅: 英: anno Domini、略号：AD）および西暦紀元前（英: before Christ、略号：BC）は、ユリウス暦やグレゴリオ暦の年を呼称するときに用いられる。通常、伝統的な西暦紀元には0年や負数の年は存在しないが、天文学では、0年や負数による西暦年を用いる。

- ^ 紀元の最初の年は「紀元1年」であり、紀元100年までで100年間（第1世紀）となる。したがって第2世紀は紀元101年から始まり、紀元200年に終わる。このように世紀は後ろの桁に「01」と付く数の年から始まる（例えば、1801年、1901年、2001年など）。同様に千年紀も1001年および2001年から始まる。この考えは、世紀・千年紀は末尾の数字が0のときに始まる（1800年、1900年、2000年など）とする、より一般的な概念とは相反する。例えば、千年紀のお祝いは2000年に最も近い1999年の大晦日に行われることも少なくない。
