『シカゴ・マニュアル・オブ・スタイル』（The Chicago Manual of Style、CMOS）は、1906年からシカゴ大学出版局から出版されているアメリカ英語のスタイルガイドである[1]。アメリカ合衆国の代表的なスタイルガイドのひとつであり、出版業界で広く利用されている文章作成や引用のルールを規定してきた。[2]
同ガイドは特にアメリカ英語に焦点を当てており、文法や語法といった編集実務の側面から、文書作成や書式に至るまでを網羅している。
ハードカバーの書籍として出版されているほか、検索可能なウェブサイト形式での購読利用も可能である。オンライン版では、主に教員、学生、図書館員を対象とした無料のリソースも提供されている。
歴史
このマニュアルは、1891年に設立されたシカゴ大学出版局の内部で使われていた規則集から発展したもので、『マニュアル・オブ・スタイル』の題で1906年に初版が出版された。この版は50セントで売られ、内容は200ページほどで、その半分が印刷見本であった[3]。
1969年に出版された第12版で内容が大きく改められ、この版によってスタイルガイドの標準としての地位を固めた。第12版は15万部以上が売れたが、これは初版から11版までを合計した数にほぼ等しい。1982年の第13版で書名が現在のものに変更された。1993年の第14版ではDTPやワードプロセッサが、2003年の第15版ではWorld Wide Webに関する記述が追加された。2006年にはオンライン版の提供がはじまった。その後2010年に第16版、2017年に第17版が出版されている。第17版のページ数は書籍版で1,000ページを越える[3]。2024年に第18版が出版された[4]。
用途
世界中の多くの出版社が、同書を自社のスタイルガイドとして採用している。社会科学系の出版物の一部や、北米の歴史学雑誌の大部分で用いられているほか[5]、米国人類学会（英語: American Anthropological Association）のスタイルガイド、米国歴史家機構（英語: Organization of American Historians）のスタイルシート、そしてAppleスタイルガイドを含む企業のスタイルガイドなどの基礎にもなっている[6]。

ケイト・L・トゥラビアン（英語版、1893-1987）による『シカゴ・スタイル 研究論文執筆マニュアル』(A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations)は、『シカゴ・マニュアル・オブ・スタイル』にもとづいた論文用のスタイルガイドで、2018年に第9版が出版されている。日本語訳も存在する。
