Bitbucket は、Mercurial(2020年6月1日までのリリース[1])またはGit(2011年10月以降[2])リビジョン管理システムを使用するソースコードおよび開発プロジェクト向けに、アトラシアンが運営するWeb ベースのバージョン管理リポジトリホスティングサービスである。商用プランと無料アカウントの両方を提供している。2019年2月現在[3]、プライベートリポジトリを無制限に持てる無料アカウントを提供している (無料アカウントの場合、5 ユーザーまで使用できる)。ユーザーがプライベートリポジトリしか持っていない場合でも、プライベートリポジトリはプロファイルページに表示されず、ウェブサイト上には"このユーザーはリポジトリを持っていません"と表示される。このサービスはDjangoフレームワークを用いてPythonで書かれている。[4]

ビットバケツ(bit bucket)とは、コンピュータのデータが失われること全般を意味するジャーゴンである。もともとはパンチカードにキーパンチで穴を空けた際に出るくずを入れる容器を指して使った言葉である（正式名称は "chad box"、"chip box"）。また、コンピュータのシフト演算によって桁あふれしたデータを受けるための架空の容器を意味したが、今では「不要なメールを削除した」、「間違って捨ててしまった」、またはデータの送信し忘れの言い訳など、様々な意味で「ビットバケツ行きになった」などの使われ方をしている。UNIXにおいてはビットバケツとは大抵スペシャルファイルの「/dev/null」を意味する。
