Apple Reinvents Textbooks with iBooks 2 for iPad - （Apple プレスリリース 2012年1月19日。英語）
iBooks Authorとは、Appleが発表した、電子書籍を作成できるアプリケーションの名称である。
iBooks Authorを使用して作成された電子書籍は、Appleの電位書籍ストア「iBookstore」を通じて有償・無償で配信することができる。または、PDF形式で出力して印刷・配布することも可能である。
iBooks Authorでは、あらかじめ多様なテンプレートが用意されており、テキストを入力したり、画像が動画などのマルチメディアデータをドラッグ&ドロップで配置していくことにより、電子書籍のコンテンツを作成することができる。作成されたファイルには「.iba」の拡張子が付く。また、PDF形式で出力することもできる。
iBooks AuthorはMac App Storeを通じて配信されており、無償で利用できる。動作環境としてOSが「Mac OS X Lion」（10.7.2）以降である必要がある。
iBooks Authorは2012年1月19日に公開された。同時に、電子書籍リーダーの新バージョン「iBooks 2」と、大学の講義などの教育コンテンツをポッドキャストで配信できる「iTunes U」の専用アプリケーションの提供も開始されている。
