「of which」の意味・「of which」とは

「of which」は英語の関係代名詞で、直訳すると「その中の」という意味になる。主に前文で述べた事柄に対して、それが含まれる大きな範囲や集合を指す場合に使用される。例えば、「I have three books, two of which are novels.」という文では、「私は3冊の本を持っていて、そのうちの2冊は小説である」という意味になる。

「of which」の発音は、IPA表記では /əv wɪtʃ/ となる。カタカナ表記では「オヴ ウィチ」が最も近い。日本人が発音する際のカタカナ英語では「オブ ウィチ」が一般的である。なお、「of which」は発音によって意味や品詞が変わる単語ではない。
