光ファイバの構造の一部をさす。光ファイバは中心のコアとコアを囲むクラッドから構成される。材質は一般的に石英ガラスがプラスチックでできている。また、クラッドはコアよりも屈折率が1%ほど小さく、光をコアの内に安定に閉じ込めておく役割を果たす。
