『The Gardens Between』は、オーストラリアのゲームソフト開発スタジオThe Voxel Agentsが開発したアクションパズルゲーム。
概要
活発な少女Arinaと聡明な少年Frendtの友情を描いた作品で、現実世界から異世界に迷い込んだ二人が水上の島々を巡り、そこに散りばめられたノスタルジックな記憶の断片から二人の共通の思い出を浮かび上がらせていく。二人は作中で様々な仕草を見せるが台詞や説明文は一切なく、心情はプレイヤーの想像に委ねられる。
ゲーム内では、キャラクターではなく時間の流れを操作する。ArinaとFrendtの行動や島の風景は、時間を前後させることにより映像を再生、逆再生、一時停止するかのように表現される。経路が寸断された地点では時間がそれ以上進まなくなるため、島にある仕掛けと時間の前後操作を組み合わせて問題の解決を目指すことになる。
開発元のThe Voxel Agentsによると本作の作風は日本文化から大きな影響を受け、思春期の子供を主体とする空想的な物語の設定はスタジオジブリ作品の要素が、島の描写をきれいに見せる手法については枯山水の理念が反映されている[18][19][20]。一方、時間を操作するという前述のアイデアは、SF映画『マイノリティ・リポート』の中で主演のトム・クルーズが大型スクリーンに手をかざして映像を操作するシーンから着想を得ている[21][22]。
システム
本作の基本操作は、時間を進める、時間を戻す、特定地点で何らかのアクションを起こす、の3種類。何も操作していない時は時間が停止する。時間を進めてArinaとFrendtがゴール地点に到達しArinaが持つ点灯したランタンを台座に収めれば島のクリアとなり、次の島へ進む。
Arinaが持つランタンは、島内の光に近づけると点灯、闇に近づけると消灯する。点灯したランタンは各地点の台座に収めることで道が切り開かれるほか、霧が発生していて進めない場所で霧を晴らす効果もある。
Frendtは、島内に配置されている様々な仕掛けに反応する。特定個所に吊るされている鐘を鳴らすと、Frendtたちやその周囲の時間が停止した状態で特定の物の時間だけを操作することが可能になる。
