ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) とは科学者やその他学術著作者を一意的に識別するための非プロプライエタリ英数字コードである[1][2][3][4]。ORCIDを用いることにより、個別の著者が科学文献や人文科学における出版物へ寄稿した際に、その人を特定できなくなってしまう問題を解決しようとしている。特に、ほとんどの人名は独自ではなく同姓同名の人がいたり、結婚や文化的事情などによって改名したり、ファーストネームのイニシャル（頭文字）表記使用、異なる文字の利用といった事情で一貫性をもたないなどの場合があるためである。ORCIDは人を対象とした永続的識別子を提供しており、これはデジタルネットワーク上のコンテンツを対象としたデジタルオブジェクト識別子(DOI)と類似のものとなっている[5]。

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID)識別子は学術研究者のためにISNIが確保した区画で、別の団体が管理しているが、この2つの組織はこれらの活動を調整している。個人研究者は自身のORCIDを、ORCIDのサイトからオンライン手続きで作成できるので、個人がISNIとORCIDを両方、事実上ISNIを2つ持つことが可能になる（詳細はORCIDを参照）。
