HD 129116は、ケンタウルス座の北東部に位置している連星系^[2]^[3]である。HD 129116という名称はヘンリー・ドレイパーカタログにおけるもので、バイエル符号におけるケンタウルス座b星（英語: b Centauri）という名称でも知られている^[1]。見かけの明るさは4等級で、肉眼ではかすかに観測することができ、青白く光って見える。ガイア計画による年周視差測定の結果に基づくと、地球からは約330光年離れており^[4]、絶対等級は約-1等級となる^[8]。HD 129116は93%の確率でさそり–ケンタウルス座アソシエーションと呼ばれるアソシエーションに属すると考えられている^[9]。

^ NASA Exoplanet Archive には2021年12月時点でスペクトル分類がB型の恒星を公転している太陽系外惑星が8個掲載されている^[15]。そのうち、主星が主系列星のものに限るとKELT-9bとHD 97048 bの2個になるが、そのどちらの主星もスペクトル分類はB型とA型の境界付近になっており、A型主系列星に分類される可能性もある。この他の事例はいずれも褐色矮星ほどの質量を持っているものや、主星が主系列星ではなくB型準矮星や準巨星であるため（詳細はB型主系列星#惑星系を参照）^[15]、確実にB型主系列星を公転しているといえる太陽系外惑星は知られていなかった。
