DUT1(ΔUT1)とは、地球の自転によって定義される世界時UT1と、原子時計によって定義される協定世界時(UTC)との差である。
- DUT1 = UT1 − UTC
UTCは、DUT1が-0.9秒から+0.9秒の範囲に収まるように閏秒によって調整されている。調整が必要な理由は、一つには、潮汐減速や、海水や大気などの地球内部における質量の移動に起因して、地球の自転が一定ではないことがある。他の理由は、国際単位系(SI)の秒（UTCもこれに従っている）が、現行の平均太陽時における秒よりもわずかに短く定義されていることである[1]。
DUT1の予報値は、IERSのBulletin Aとして発表される。
アメリカのWWVやイギリスのMSFなど、いくつかの標準電波では、0.1秒の精度のDUT1の週間速報値を通知している。日本のJJYでは通知していない。

Essen, in Metrologia, vol.4 (1968), pp.161–165, on p.162. As is well known, the 9192631770 figure was chosen for the SI second. L Essen in the same 1968 article (p.162) stated that this "seemed reasonable in view of the variations in UT2".
