1789年の創設以来、45人がアメリカ合衆国大統領に就任し、そのうち8人が在任中に死去している[1]。8人のうち暗殺されたものは4人、自然死したものは4人である。それらの事例において副大統領が大統領職を継承した。この慣行は現在、1967年に批准されたアメリカ合衆国憲法修正第25条第1節「大統領の免職、死亡、辞職の場合には、副大統領が大統領となる。」に準拠している[2]。この慣行の初の承認は最初に採択された憲法第2条第1節第6項に規定されており、次のように書かれている:
