Dicerは、ヒトではDICER1遺伝子によってコードされる酵素である。DicerはRNase IIIファミリーに属し、二本鎖RNA(dsRNA)とpre-miRNAをそれぞれsiRNA、miRNAと呼ばれる短いdsRNA断片へと切断する。これらの断片は約20–25塩基対の長さであり、3'末端に2塩基のオーバーハングが存在する。DicerはRNAiに必要不可欠なRNA誘導サイレンシング複合体(RISC)の活性化を促進する。RISCは触媒を担う構成要素としてArgonauteを持ち、ArgonauteはmRNAを分解するエンドヌクレアーゼである。
